Cllr. Bernard Moynihan, Chairman of the Board of Management, acknowledged the wonderful achievements of students at this year’s BT Young Scientist Competition. The school had five projects at the finals in early January with ten students involved, who went on to win eight prizes in various categories.
The UCC President in his address, noted the school’s outstanding achievements over the last number of years, winning the overall prize in 2015, finishing 2nd overall in 2016, achieving best overall school in Ireland 2017, and winning numerous prizes in 2018.
Professor O’Shea expressed his delight that student Ian O’Sullivan, who was one member of the winning project in 2015, is now a Medical student at UCC. He also also acknowledged the achievements of Coláiste Treasa past pupil Dr. Fiona Edwards Murphy who recently addressed UCC students at a graduation ceremony in relation to encouraging girls to study STEM subjects. Professor O’ Shea said he was aware that Kanturk was a farming area and that the best of foods are produced in Cork such as milk, cheese and butter and he said that UCC will be committed to providing courses to produce graduates who will support and drive this industry forward.
Finally, he expressed his delight that a number of his UCC staff were supporting students working on projects. He finished by acknowledging the support students received from their science teachers, school management, and their families.
