Charleville 1-14 Fermoy 0-9

CHARLEVILLE collected their second brace of points in the Rochestown Park Hotel County HL Division 2 on Sunday last at Fermoy when they were convincing winners over Fermoy. From the offset Charleville controlled matters and opened the scoring when a free from their half backline by Alan Dennehy who set up Tim Hawe for a well taken point. Fermoy with the aid of the wind in this half were back on level terms within minutes when Liam Coleman pointed a free.

During the opening stages the pace and awareness of the Charleville forwards forced the Fermoy backline to concede a number of frees that were punished by Mark Kavanagh as the winners moved into a 0-4 to 0-1 lead by the 8th minute. Fermoy quickly got to grips and a point each by Brian O’Sullivan and Liam Coleman left a point between the teams by the 12th minute. However for the rest of the half Charleville gained control with Jack Doyle, Kevin O’Connor and Darren Casey impressing in the half forward line.

The winners reeled off the next five points and it helped them move 0-9 to 0-3 in front by the 21st minute. Liam Coleman kept Fermoy in touch with two frees in quick succession but it was another Mark Kavanagh point in injury time that saw Charleville lead by double scores at the break 0-10 to 0-5.

On the changeover Charleville started in a very determined manner and a point each by Cathal O’Carroll and Andrew Cagney moved them 7 clear. Fermoy tried hard to get back into the contest with Liam Coleman, Jack Scannell and Brian O’Sullivan making an impression but up front they were unable to breach the Charleville backline for a goal they so badly needed. Liam Coleman had two more points from frees but their chances of a revival were dealt a blow in the 47th minute when Andrew Cagney was on hand to score the only goal of the game following good work by Kevin O’Connor and Darren Casey.

The remainder of the game saw Mark Kavanagh with a free extend his sides lead to 1-14 to 0-7. Fermoy battled to the end with Liam Coleman adding two more points before the final whistle but there was no denying Charleville their deserved victory.
