First half goals key to Duarigle win over Boherbue

-

Duarigle Gaels 4-12 Boherbue 0-11

A STRONG opening half performance laid the foundation for holders Duarigle Gaels to sweep past Boherbue in the Central Stores, Kanturk Duhallow U-21 ‘B’ FC semi-final at Kiskeam.

Challengers Boherbue had showed encouraging signs early on yet Duarigle Gaels greater energy and more potent forward unit proved the difference in favour of the Millstreet and Cullen combination. Both sides had players that figured on the Boherbue Comprehensive School team defeated in a marathon All Ireland Colleges Final. However knocks to a number of Boherbue players impacted on their game and trailing by seven points at the break, they seldom threatened to create sufficient inroads.

Boherbue had set the tone in a purple start, lead points gained by Gerry O’Sullivan, Liam Moynihan and David O’Connor. But as the game settled, Duarigle came more into the picture, helped enormously by a goal from Neil Flahive with Darragh Cashman involved in the assist.

And when Cashman goaled himself, it confirmed the Gaels had taken a grip on the proceedings. Boherbue hung in, their cause helped on points to O’Sullivan, Alan and David O’Connor to leave just two between the sides.

Still Duarigle bossed the key battles, Conor Hickey, Francis Cronin and Shane Hickey formed a solid barrier in defence and instigated a number of attacks. At midfield, Colin Walsh and Patrick Dineen held theie own with Cashman, Flahive and Colin O’Leary impressing in attack.

Points from Flahive and Danny Buckley preceeded a third goal from full forward O’Leary to secure a clear 3-6 to 0-8 advantage at the break.

The tempo dropped on the restart, Duarigle remaining on top, Flahive and Cashman pointing prior to Flahive converting a penalty at the three quarter stage. A tiring Boherbue had neither the shape nor the intensity to mount a rescue from that position.

The rest of the contest was purely academic, Duarigle easing to victory and set up a confrontation against Knocknagree that will go right down to the wire.
