Patrician Academy take first ever Simcox Cup title

Patrician Academy Mallow 2-16 St Francis Rochestown 2-10

PATRICIAN Academy continued their good run in Colleges Senior football when they accounted for St Francis College (Rochestown) in the prestigiou­s Cork Colleges Senior A FC final at the 4G Pitch in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Wednesday.

Only just a few weeks previous to this game St Francis College contested the Munster Senior A FC semi final where they lost out to Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuidhne by 0-13 to 2-6.

On this occasion Academy played with the wind in the first half. Exchanges were close with both sides exchanging points. In the 27th minute Rochestown came close to a goal but Stephen Fenton’s effort from close range went over for a point. The sides finished all square at the break 0-6 each.

On the resumption the well balanced Academy side did very well against the wind. They showed great teamwork and accuracy. They had a goal and two points in a four minute spell. Their goal came from Conor Corbett after good play by Ciaran O’Sullivan 1-8 to 0-6. Barry O’Shea and Jack Dillon were the point scorers. Rochestown fought back well. Conor Russell had three pointed frees.

The Mallow side fought back well using the short passing to great effect. Kieran Twomey pointed a free and Eanna O’Hanlon and Conor Corbett worked well with O’Hanlon taking the return pass and crashing to the net as Academy led 2-12 to 0-9 after 51 minutes.

‘Roco’ battled hard they had a very good point by Conor Russell with Alan O’Hare having a cracking goal 2-12 to 1-10. Conor Corbett and Kieran Twomey replied with a point each before Rochestown forced a penalty when Adam Cantwell was fouled. Conor Russell cooly dispatched the penalty to the net. Academy replied with two more points b y the O’Shea brothers Barry & Colm as they held out for a first ever win in the Cork Senior A FC final.

After the game John O’Brien Chairman Cork GAA Colleges Board presented the Simcox Cup to the winning captain Kieran Twomey.
