Goals help Ballyhea make it three wins from three

BALLYHEA had their third win from three games played in the Red FM Div 1 County SHL at Ballyhea on Sunday.

The winners had their two goals in the opening half by Maurice O’Sullivan and Pa O’Callaghan and they held a substantia­l lead for most of the game. Conor Hegarty opened the scoring for the City side. Maurice O’Sullivan placed Tom Hanley for Ballyhea’s opening score in the 3rd minute. Conor Hegarty edged Bishopstow­n ahead again with Ballyhea taking the lead in the 8th minute when Pa O’Callaghan put Maurice O’Sullivan through for a goal. Shane O’Neill and Maurice O’Sullivan swopped a point with Brian Murray also pointing for Bishopstow­n.

The home side had their second goal in the 14th minute when Jamie Copps worked well for Pa O’Callaghan who netted opening up a lead 2-2 to 0-4. Brian O’Driscoll kept Bishopstow­n in touch with a point. Tom Hanley and David Quaid swopped a point. Points for Ballyhea by Pa O’Callaghan (2) and Jamie Copps had the winners ahead at the break 2-7 to 0-7.

On the restart Brian Murray had two early pointed frees. Pat O’Callaghan replied with two pointed frees as Ballyhea regained their two goal lead 2-9 to 0-9. By the end of the 3rd quarter they were ahead 2-11 to 0-11 when Shane O’Neill pointed a long range free. Pa O’Callaghan added two more frees with Shane O’Neill and Colm O’Driscoll having a point each 2-13 to 0-13. Pa O’Callaghan pointed a sideline cut in the 52nd minute. Eugene O’Leary had Ballyhea’s last point with Brian Murray pointing an injury time free for Bishopstow­n. Kilworth 1-22 Charlevill­e 2-16

KILWORTH finished strong to take the points in the Red FM Division 2 County IHL at Charlevill­e on Sunday. The game was close all through with very little separating two evenly matched sides. The sides were level

0-1, 0-2 and 0-3 each after 11 minutes. Kilworth hit the front when Nathan Byrne put Will Condon in for a point. Eoin Carey added two points one from a free as the visitors moved 0-6 to 0-3 clear. Charlevill­e battled back well. Simon Gleeson worked well for Jack Doyle who pointed. Andrew Cagney and Conor Buckley with points levelled for the 4th time at 0-6 each. They were also deadlocked at 0-7 each.

Kilworth finished the half very strong. Their defence were very solid and five points in a row by Nathan Byrne, Will Condon, Eoin Carey (2) and Liam Whelan had them ahead 0-12 to 0-7 at the break.

Eoin Carey with another free gave his side a six point lead. Charlevill­e came back well. Mark Kavanagh pointed a free and they had a goal by Andrew Cagney after good combined play by Jack Doyle 0-14 to 1-9. Liam Whelan pointed for Kilworth in the 40th minute. Good play by Jack Doyle led to a fine Jack Callaghan point. Paddy Moakley pointed for Kilworth before Andrew Cagney with his second goal levelled at

0-16 to 2-10 entering the final quarter. Kilworth again hit the front through Eoin Carey. Mark Kavanagh pointed a free after a foul on Darren Casey. Good play for Charlevill­e by Jack Meade and Alan Dennehy led to another Jack Doyle point. The Rathluirc side moved two clear when Mark Kavanagh pointed a free 2-13 to 0-17. Both sides continued to exchange points as Charlevill­e led by 3 in the 57th minute 2-16 to 0-19. Kilworth finished very strong. Eoin Carey added three late points to level for the seventh time 2-16 to 0-22. In injury time a long free by Kieran Walsh found Will Condon who goaled followed by the final whistle.

Fermoy 1-15 Clyda Rovers 0-6

FERMOY continued their great run in the County FL Division 2 when they were comfortabl­e winners over Clyda Rovers at Fermoy on Sunday.

The winners laid the foundation for victory with an impressive first half display. Ruairi O’Hagan and Liam Coleman moved them 0-2 to no score in front before Clyda Rovers registered their opening score when Michael Forde set up Ben O’Connor for point in the 8th minute. At this stage Fermoy were showing the greater urgency and struck for the only goal of the game in the 13th minute when a sweeping movement involving at least 5 players set up Alan O’Connor who finished to the net from close range.

The remainder of the half belonged to the home side with Ruairi O’Hagan, Padraigh De Roiste, Daniel O’Flynn and Alan O’Connor with some great points moving them 1-6 to 0-1 in front by the 24th minute. Conor Flanagan kept Clyda Rovers in touch with a free but it was Fermoy that completed the first half scoring when Liam Coleman kicked over a long range free to lead at the interval by 1-7 to 0-2.

On the changeover Clyda Rovers improved greatly. Despite eight points separating the teams exchanges were close enough during the third quarter. Clyda Rovers got the second half scoring underway when Sean O’Callaghan and Colin Kelly combined well to set up Conor Flanagan for a fine point. Fermoy’s response was instant with Ruairi O’Hagan and Daniel O’Flynn linking up very well to set up the impressive Padraigh De Roiste for a point. From here to the end of the third quarter both teams swapped points courtesy of Ruairi O’Hagan (2) Conor Flanagan and James Buckley 1-10 to 0-5.

However it was Fermoy that prevailed from here as they carried the ball out of the backline to great effect. Padraigh De Roiste and Brian O’Sullivan with two long range points made it 1-12 to 0-5 by the 54th minute. Conor Flanagan had a point for the Rovers but it was Fermoy that emerged convincing winners and they completed the scoring with late points by Martin Brennan, Cian O’Carroll and Padraigh De Roiste.
