AFTER finishing runners up in their respective cup finals the previous week, there was huge consolation for Mallow United U/15 and U/13 Boys as both sides were crowned league champions last weekend after winning their crucial league ties.

After finishing as premier division runners up for the last four seasons, it would be hard to find a team more deserving of a league title than Mallow’s U/15 Boys and coaches Derek Fortune and Prince Amechi. A second half brace from Kennedy and Amechi gave Mallow a 2-0 advantage over Richmond at St. Gobnaits Park on Saturday morning which was enough to take three points and seal the league title with one game remaining.

At the same time up the road in Rockmount Park, Mallow United U/13 Boys were playing out a 3-2 thriller against Springfield Ramblers in the Division 1 title play-off. Aaron Owens gave Mallow an early lead but Springfield equalised before half time. With five minutes remaining Cathal Mullins put Mallow ahead again but 2 minutes later Springfield equalised for a second time.

When it looked like the sides could not be separated, Jack Roche got a third goal for Mallow to give them the win and a well deserved Division 1 title for the boys and coaches Roy and Willie Cunningham and Don Murphy.

Mallow United U/15 and U/13 Boys thus finish their seasons as league champions and cup runners up, a superb year for both sides and a credit to the players, coaches and parents who made it all possible.

On Sunday it was the turn of Mallow United U/14A Boys who were promoted for the second successive season after an impressive 3-0 win in their last game of the season, which sees them finish as runners up in Division 5. Donough Ryan got two for Mallow with Ben Ford getting the third.

The effort by the boys and their coaches over the last two years has been outstanding and no doubt they will be ready to go again aiming to make it three in a row when next season comes around in the Autumn.

On Thursday last, Mallow United U/16 Boys finished Cork Local Cup runners up after Corinthians Boys were 3-0 winners in the Turners Cross final. Despite the loss it was another great season for the Mallow lads who also finished fifth in the U/16 Premier Division, a great achievement by all involved.

In inter-provincial fixtures, Mallow United’s Cian Kelliher and Jack Buckley were both part of the victorious Munster Football For All squad that got the better of Leinster on Saturday.

The Mallow United Summer Soccer Street League for kids returns this June. The weekly 7-aside soccer tournament will take place every Tuesday at 6.30pm from June 4 to June 25 at St. Gobnaits Park, Mallow.

All boys and girls born from 2009 to 2013 are welcome to come along each night. The games are hosted in a safe and friendly environment, on grass pitches supervised by Mallow United coaches but with minimal adult intervention to encourage independent creative football, fun and freedom to play.

Children are asked to bring shin guards and water and the cost is €2 per child each night.

This year Mallow United will again hold three registration nights in St. Gobnaits Park clubhouse.
