Bandon 1-14 Glanworth 3-7

BANDON and Glanworth played out a highly competitive Co Division 3 FL encounter at Glanworth on Wednesday evening where a late rally by the Carbery outfit saw them emerge victors by the narrowest of margins.

The opening stages was somewhat of a goal feast with three goals scored by the 12th minute. Glanworth had the games opening goal in the fourth minute when Sean Finn cut through the heart of the Bandon defence to finish to the net 1-1 to no score. Bandon’s response was swift. In their next attack Michael Cahalane and Ronan Crowley linked up well to set up Mark Sugrue who netted. Michael Cahalane followed with a point to force level at 1-1 each. Glanworth were creating their fair share of chances at this early stage.

In the 13th minute Jack Flavin was on hand to score their second goal after Dave Pyne, Robert O’Driscoll and Sean Finn combined well and it moved them double scores in front 2-2 to 1-1. The remainder of the game saw both sets of defences tighten up considerably. Aidan O’Mahony and Shane O’Riordan swapped a point before a good spell by Bandon yielded some well taken scores by Mark Sugrue (2) and Barry Collins to come within a point by the 22nd minute 2-3 to 1-5. Ger O’Neill steadied the ship for Glanworth with a point but it was Bandon that were doing very well at this stage. Mark Sugrue with two points in as many minutes forced level at 2-4 to 1-7. In injury time Glanworth edged in front again when Shane O’Riordan pointed a difficult free as they held a slender 2-5 to 1-7 lead at the shortwhistle.

On the resumption Bandon forced level within minutes when Michael Cahalane set up Barry Collins for a point. The sides were also tied at 2-6 to 1-9 when Sean Finn and Ronan Crowley traded a point. Glanworth upped their efforts once again with Shane O’Riordan scoring 1-1 by the end of the third quarter that moved them 3-7 to 1-9 in front – the goal coming when a free deceived everyone to make it way to the net. Despite being four points clear this proved to be the home sides last score of the game.

Instead it was Bandon that slowly clawed back their opponents lead. Barry Collins kicked a great point near the sideline before Mark Sugrue with a free in the 53rd minute made it 3-7 to 1-11. With time running out Glanworth still looked like holding on for a close win but it was Bandon that staged a great rally in the closing moments. Mark Sugrue added another point from a free before he turned provider for Barry Collins to get the equalising score in injury time 3-7 to 1-13. The resultant kickout saw Bandon win possession with Ronan Crowley kicking over to give them the lead for the first time in the game.

Glanworth threw caution to the wind in search of levelling score. They forced a free deep in stoppage time but the effort from a difficult angle dropped short and was cleared to safety. This was greeted by the final whistle with Bandon emerging winners by the narrowest of margins.
