Close win for Ballyhooly hurlers

Ballyhooly 1-17 Kilshannig 0-18

A goal for Ballyhooly by Emmet O’Riordan proved a vital score as they emerged close winners over Kilshannig in the Cavanagh’s Fermoy Division 1 HL at Ballyhooly on Sunday.

James Roche opened the scoring with an early point for the winners. James O’Hanlon levelled in the second minute. Ballyhooly added a pointed free by James Roche. Good play by James Roche led to a Kevin Kiely point as Ballyhooly moved 0-4 to 0-1 clear after six minutes. Kilshannig came back well. Kevin O’Flynn pointed from play and a free.

Good work by impressive Jack Twomey led to a fine point by Barry O’Shea as the sides were level 0-5 each. They were also deadlocked at 0-6 apiece in the 20th minute. The winners goal came a minute later when Kevin Kiely and James Roche worked well for Emmet O’Riordan who goaled. The winners maintained a slight lead for the rest of the game. Kevin Kiely and James Roche (two frees) opened up a lead 1-9 to 0-7. Good play by Jerome Murphy led to a fine point. Kevin O’Flynn with a free reduced the lead to a goal 1-9 to 0-9 at the break.

On the resumption Ballyhooly regained the five point lead with points by James Roche (free) and Jerry O’Connor. Kilshannig again hit back – Roddy O’Mahony worked well for Kevin O’Flynn who pointed Barry O’Shea placed Pat Egan for a point on the run 1-11 to 0-11.

Seamus Roche landed a good point for the winners after good play by Kevin Kiely and Jerry O’Connor. Kilshannig hit back with Kevin O’Flynn and Pat Egan working well for Barry O’Shea who cut the lead to a goal once more 1-12 to 0-12. James Roche with a point from a free and play restored the five point lead.

Kilshannig put in a great last 10 minutes. Kevin O’Flynn (free) and Jack Twomey long range cut the deficit once more to a goal 1-14 to 0-14. Kevin O’Flynn and Kevin Kiely kicked effort swopped a point. Peter Aherne struck a very good point for the winners 1-16 to 0-15. Kilshannig got back within a goal once more when Jerome Murphy worked well for Kevin O’Flynn who sent over.

In injury-time Ballyhooly had their last score by James Roche (free). Kilshannig battled very hard. Kevin O’Flynn pointed a free. Frank McCarthy completed the scoring with a point deep in injury time.
