Strong second half sees Grange claim Division 1 league points

Grange 2-13 Killavullen 1-8

A GOOD showing by Grange in the second half saw them run out worthy winners over Killavullen in the Cavanagh’s Fermoy Division 1 FL at Grange.

The opening half was keenly contested with very little separating the teams. Killavullen started at a hectic pace having some well taken points by Eoghan Buckley, David Brosnan and Garry Lane by the seventh minute to move 0-3 to no score in front. As the half went on the home side quickly got to grips. They forced the Killavullen defence to concede a number of frees that were duly punished by Noel Barry by the end of the first quarter that levelled matters at 0-3 apiece.

By half time they were level again at 0-4 and 0-5 each when Liam Cronin, Michael Hennessy, David Brosnan and Noel Barry kicked over points that left it all to play for in the second half.

On the changeover despite both teams swapping an early point it Killavullen that made a promising start. They created a couple of scoring chances that they failed to convert, including Liam Cronin being denied a certain goal when the Grange keeper Gavin Dawson made a splendid save off his line.

However as the half went on Grange gained a foothold with Mark Timlin, John Carmody, Brian Cashman, Noel Barry, Alan McNamara and Kurt Wheeler thundering into the game. David Brosnan and John Carmody traded a point before Grange took the lead for the first time when Kurt Wheeler pointed in the 43rd minute.

Further pressure saw John Carmody and Noel Barry follow with a point each to move 0-10 to 0-7 clear by the 48th minute.

Two minutes later the lead was increased to six points when a quickly taken free set up Kurt Wheeler for a well taken goal. Killavullen’s response was swift and in their next attack a foul on Seamus Fox resulted in a penalty being awarded that David Brosnan finished to the net 1-10 to 1-7. Killavullen tried hard to get back on terms but it was Grange that prevailed from here.

In the 54th minute Dave Keating was upended in the square and they were awarded a penalty that Noel Barry finished to the net 2-10 to 1-7 clear. Grange were now in the ascendency adding some well taken points by Barry Kennedy, Kurt Wheeler and Mark Timlin before the final whistle while Eoghan Buckley added a late point for Killavullen.
