Late goals gives Gaels combitatio­n sixth win on trot

Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels 5-3 Shanballym­ore 1-13

AN injury time goal by long serving John Breen gave Liscarroll/Churchtown Gaels their sixth win from their six games in Division 2 FL at Shanballym­ore on Sunday.

The winners aided by the stiff breeze got off to a very good start with early goals by John Breen and Eugene Barrett. Sean Lynch pointed for the home side in the seventh minute. Gaels hit their third goal in the 12th minute when John Breen worked well for Eugene Barrett who netted 3-1 to 0-2.

Shanballym­ore gradually got up to the required pace. They had a series of points by Eoin O’Regan, Richard Hallahan, Alan Sheedy and Sean Lynch as the lead was down to two points 3-1 to 0-8 after 25 minutes. In the closing moments Gaels had two points by Aidan Murphy as they led at the break 3-3 to 0-8.

Eugene Barrett had a goal for the winners on the restart. Shanbally did well from here on. They got on top in vital sectors and the introducti­on of Kenneth Barry and Paul Burke made a huge difference up front. Kenneth Barry pointed and Alan Sheedy found the net after good combined play by Kenneth Barry and Paul Burke 4-3 to 1-9.

Eoin McHugh moved to attack in the last quarter and played very well. By the 50th minute the sides were level 4-3 to 1-12. A sideline kick by Jamie Sheedy found Kenneth Barry who pointed in the dying moments.

Gaels forced a free when Shane Coleman was fouled. The resultant free landed on the edge of the square with John Breen finishing to the net to give his side a two point win.
