Meelin looks ahead to Twomey Remorial Festival of sport

SPORT aplenty is promised at the Twomey Family Remorial Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, June 8/9 in Meelin with a diverse outdoor sporting programme of a cycle, road race and GAA related events.

Over the years, proceeds from the weekend have gone towards supporting worthy causes, namely Bru Columbanus, Cork; St. Joseph’s Foundation, Charlevill­e; Reach Out Mental Health; 3T’s Suicide Prevention and Cork Samaritans.

Procceding­s begin on Saturday, June 8 with the Con Twomey Memorial Hurling Blitz on the grounds of Meelin GAA. Later in the day, a Table Quiz takes place in Meelin Hall commencing at 8.30pm.

Sunday’s action (June 9) is up and away at 8.30pm with a 40/110km cycle from Rockchapel Community Centre. Organised in conjunctio­n with Kanturk Cycling Club, the race starts and finishes in Rockchapel. The first 300 bikes or anyone who registers online and completes cycle on the day gets Twomey Family Remorial custom designed Finisher’s Medal “I cycled the highest village in Ireland”.

Duhallow AC are lending their backing to the Meelin 4-mile road race on Sunday commencing at 1.30pm, that preceeded 30 minutes earlier by a walk. Again the first 150 runners or anyone who registers online and completes the run on the day get a Twomey Family Remorial custom designed Finisher’s Medal “I ran in the highest village in Ireland.”
