GOLDENJUBILEE

From early evening on Friday last, they came in their droves to celebrate the golden jubilee of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. A tremendous amount of planning had gone into its preparations and this was clearly visible by the smooth way the whole programme presented itself.

The organising Committee, the Pastoral Council, can take a bow but they received huge help from both the Liturgy group and the Alter Society who had the Church beautifully decorated and spotless.

The Kiskeam Brass Band gave a recital in the church yard prior to the 8pm Mass to greet people on arrival. Present at the Jubilee Mass were Bishop Raymond Browne plus eleven priests who concelebrated with local PP Fr Jim Kennelly.

Many of the participants in the ceremony had either worked on the building in 1979 or membes of their families had.

The main contractor, the late Christy Feehan was represented by his son Derry, wife Mairead and children Aoife and Keelan.

Present also was stone mason Mick O’Callaghan, Millstreet who was high in his praise for fellow workers Jack O’Connor, and Eugie Clifford both from Gneeves for the method they had for sharpening the mason’s chisels – it was an art in itself, he stated.

Matt O’Mahony and Dan Shine were the gift bearers. Gthe main plastering contractor Henry Lake travelled from Carrigaline to be present and share in the memories.

People actually came from far and near, they were there to celebrate an occasion, nobody was in a hurry – it was like old times in the churchyard with groups huddled together chatting, joking, let the rest of the world go bye seemed to be their attitude.

Afterwards, everyone was invited to the Hall where the tables were set similar to a banquet – there they dined, old friendships were renewed, the chat continued almost until midnight while the ladies worked hard with the teas, wash-up etc.

It was a special night, one that as already stated took a huge amount of planning anda although the organisers no doubt were breathing a sigh of relief at the final whistle, they along with those that were lucky enough to be in attendance were also sorry that it was all over.

It was just one of those occasions.
