‘Serendipity Sunday’ in Mitchelstown

- BILL BROWNE

FOLLOWING on from the success of its inaugural concert last month, the St George’s Arts and Heritage Centre in Mitchelstown will open its doors to the public again on Sunday for a free ‘Sunday Serendipity’ open day.

Earlier this year the former St George’s Church on George Street, which closed its doors three years ago, was taken over by the Brigown Arts and Heritage Project, which has committed to giving the building a new lease of life devoted to the arts, heritage and culture.

It is hoped that once the refurbishment project, which will cost in the region of €1million to undertake, has been completed it will form an integral element of a major tourist trail for the wider north Cork area, incorporating other attractions including Mallow Castle and Doneraile Park.

In April, the new owners held an open day allowing the public to see the progress being made, which was followed on May 18 by a sell-out concert featuring local performers.

Heritage project chair Bill Power said that Sunday’s open day, which will run from 2pm to 5pm, will be somewhat different from the previous open day in that it will incorporate performances by a variety of local singers and musicians across the course of the afternoon.

“We will also have a display of old photographs, crochet and knitting displays, and Padraig Wallace will also give a recital on St George’s 18th-century organ. There will also be guided tours throughout the afternoon, of the former church and its graveyard, with a few interesting surprises in store for people,” said Mr Power.

“People are welcome to come along at any time during the afternoon, enjoy the entertainment and see St George’s Arts and Heritage Centre like they have never seen it before,” he added.

While the event is free, donations will be welcome to help offset the cost of the refurbishment project.
