MAYFIELD advanced to the County IHC fourth round following their close win over Kildorrery at Rathcormac­k on Saturday evening.

It was keenly contested all through. Mayfield opened with two early points by David O’Neill and Nicky Kelly (free). Kildorrery had their opening score a pointed free by Peter O’Brien after eight minutes.

The City side edged 0-3 to 0-1 clear. Kildorrery had another pointed free by Peter O’Brien. The sides were level 0-3 each when Finbarr Stapleton pointed. Kildorrery hit the front again through Peter O’Brien (free).

Mayfield replied with two frees by Nicky Kelly that edged them ahead. Finbarr Stapleton levelled at 0-5 before Dylan Kent gave the Avondhu side the lead after 21 minutes.

Ian Butler saved well from Shane O’Donovan with the rebound cleared out for a ‘65 by Tom Monaghan. The ‘65 went narrowly wide. Kildorrery were also off target before Peter O’Brien with a free gave his side a two point lead 0-7 to 0-5. Mayfield were also off target.

Cathal Harrington cut through the Mayfield defence, but his effort at goal was well saved by Darren Wyse. Further pressure by Kildorrery saw them add three late points by Peter O’Brien (free) David Kelly and Dylan Kent as they led at the break 0-10 to 0-5.

Mayfield had the aid of the stiff breeze on the changeover. They did well in the half back line and midfield sectors. Four points on-the-trot by Nicky Kelly (2) Gavin Looney and Michael J Coffey had the lead down to a point after 38 minutes.

Good play by Seán Kelly led to a fine point by Finbarr Stapleton. Nicky Kelly and Peter O’Brien swapped a pointed free as Mayfield led 0-12 to 0-10 after 43 minutes. Both sides continued to exchange points and they were deadlocked at 0-14 each.

Mayfield edged in front again with points by Shane Duggan (2) and Nicky Kelly (free) 0-17 to 0-14. Peter O’Brien kept Kildorrery in touch with another point. In the closing moments Shane O’Donovan with a long range point moved Mayfield three points clear.

Peter O’Brien completed the scoring with an injury time pointed free. Mayfield will now meet Éire Óg.
