A novel pair for B decider
A NOVEL meeting of Kiskeam and St. Johns offers the prospect of a keen battle in the Duhallow Junior B Football Championship (Group 1) Final in Boherbue on Sunday evening. Whoever emerges on top will represent Duhallow in the county confined to divisional winners, that ensures a competitive contest is in prospect.
Earlier in the Summer, St Johns sampled county honours for the first time on overcoming Ballyphehane in the C grade decider. Once, they got through for telling scores in the opening half, St Johns seized the initiative and defended it to the finish.
From a semi-final in this campaign, St Johns pulled away from Millstreet during the closing 20 minutes, owing much to a competent defence with Denis Kelleher, Denis O’Keeffe and Pa Rohan catching the eye, while John O’Mahony, Adrian Sheehan and Donal Corkery made telling strides further out the field that helped gather telling scores.
Meanwhile, no arguments surrounding Kiskeam’s passage to the final where clinical efficiency made light work of Newmarket in a one sided contest. A close encounter had been anticipated only for Kiskeam to possess too much power, pace and scoring ability for their opponents.
A well organised defence involved the outstanding work of Seán Linehan, Daire Murphy and Jack O’Connor. At midfield, Padraig O’Leary and Conor Noonan won a massive amount of ball and the attacking flair of Eoghan O’Leary and Denis Hallissey was too hot to handle that yielded telling scores.
With Kiskeam involved in a County SFC engagement against Ballincollig on Saturday, their second string may lose one or two players yet they appear to be a side running smoothly.
St Johns have maintained a winning sequence all season, they would grab the opportunity of another venture into the county. Still Kiskeam will start as favourites and their superior firepower is capable of landing the spoils.
