Poet finds her niche in Vertigo venue
CORK poet and Aosdána member Doireann Ní Ghríofa is looking forward to the Culture Night festivities on the top floor of County Hall next week.
The writer features on the bill alongside contemporary folk singer Lisa O’Neill and the Irish Guitar Quartet in the Vertigo venue.
As an offiicial trailblazer for Culture Night, Doireann believes the eclectic bill symbolises the variety and diversity of what the county has to offer culturally.
“It’s great that the audience sees and hears the likes of Lisa O’Neill and the Irish Guitar Quartet as well as poetry in Irish and English - it really is symbolic that we have a wide variety of culture here,” Doireann said. She recognises that poetry is a niche interest in Ireland but Doireann says she is kept very busy attending and appearing at poetry events throughout Ireland not just on Culture Night but throughout the year.
“I get the sense that there’s a great deal of cultural events going on all over the place,” she said.
“Take poetry for instance, which has its own niche, if you like poetry all you have to do is look for it and you will find poetry events.
“Obviously there’s always space for more events - wouldn’t it be great if there was a Culture Night every night?”
Her new book on Eibhlín Dubh Ní Chonaill casts new light on one of the heroines of Irish history and will be published by Tramp Press in April.
Her most recent book, Lies, a bilingual book of poetry in Irish and English, won the prestigious Irish Independent and Times Book of the Year Awards last year.
