Millstreet host an attractive double bill in County JAFC

-

IT’S the best of Duhallow tackling Muskerry’s fairest in an attractive double bill to the opening round to the County JAFC in Millstreet on Sunday.

Steady levels of consistency have ensured Boherbue remain as Duhallow kingpins for the third season, facing Aghinagh in the opening contest in their quest for county glory. And with no shortage of experience nor talent at their disposal, Boherbue are amongst the frontrunners of making it to the decider.

Pretty routine to date for Boherbue, John Corkery, Jerry O’Connor and Gerry O’Sullivan can trouble the best defences in the business, all capable of making impression from a constant supply of possession.

A historic day for Aghinagh on the short trip along the Butter Road to play in the county championship for the first time. This contest comes soon after falling short to Iveleary in the Mid Cork Final, Aghinagh lacking the ball handling and shooting of their opponents.

They will look to Liam Twohig, Donal Corkery and Declan Ambrose to create an impression on the scoreboard. This is a chance for Aghinagh to free themselves of the shackles and deliver a decent performance. However Boherbue possess a formidable line up and their familiarity ensure the formbook points to a win for the Duhallow champions.

Meanwhile a relatively straight forward run for Iveleary helped retain their Mid Cork JAFC and a meeting against Lyre. Also amongst the shortlist for outright honours, Iveleary endured a setback last season on a dramatic semi final loss to Dromtariffe.

However, they set a tempo within Muskerry, not bettered by any challenger come the business end to deny Aghinagh in the decider. At their best, Iveleary’s attack can inflict major damage through Cathal Vaughan, Chris Óg Jones and Brian Cronin.

Lyre will feel they didn’t do themselves justice against Boherbue in the Duhallow Final where the concession of early goals were key to the outcome. In fairness, Lyre never surrendered, David Murphy , Cathal O’Donoughue and Brendan Withers offered neat touches but not enough to halt the Bohenbue gallop.

Lyre had time to dwell on their divisional fare and a chance to reboot their system. Still Iveleary are a balanced side , fancied to get the next leg of the journey off to a winning start.
