Castletown­roche retain JBHC title

Castletown­roche 6-15 Araglin 1-12

CASTLETOWN­ROCHE retained the Fitzgerald Hurley’s JBHC(1) title at Ballygibli­n on Sunday evening. Having already won the County JBHC the Castletown side were fancied to retain this title over Araglin.

Exchanges were close early on with the sides level 0-1, 0-2 and 0-3 each. Jonathan O’Callaghan goaled from a free and Dave Relihan placed Mark O’Callaghan for a point. Good play by Jonathan O’Callaghan led to a goal by John Batterberr­y as the winners moved 2-4 to 0-3 clear.

Castletown had their third goal in the 17th minute when Dylan O’Connor put Dayne O’Neill in for a goal 3-4 to 0-3. Good play for Araglin by Paul Hynes, Sean Hegarty and Oisin Hickey led to good point by Simon Walsh. Shay Russell followed with another.

Points for Castletown by Mark O’Callaghan and Muiris Browne were followed by a Simon Walsh point for Araglin 3-6 to 0-6. Tom Kenneally and Niall Hazelwood swopped a point. Good play by Liam Keane led to a point by impressive Oisin Hickey. Mark O’Callaghan pointed a free for the winners with Dave Relihan placing Dylan O’Connor for a fine point. Tom Kenneally pointed from long range as Araglin cut the lead 3-9 to 0-11. Just before the break John Batterberr­y had his second goal for Castletown­roche as they led at the interval 4-9 to 0-11.

There was no way back for Araglin on the resumption. Mark O’Callaghan pointed an early free and he followed with a goal after good play by Niall Hazelwood 5-10 to 0-11. Mark O’Callaghan added another pointed free 5-11 to 0-11.

Both sides made a number of substituti­ons. Mark O’Callaghan added a good point from near the sideline. The winner’s sixth goal came in the 46th minute when Dylan O’Connor soloed through and goaled opening up a six goal advantage 6 -12 to 0 -12.

Donal Relihan in goal made some very good saves as Araglin tried hard for a goal. The goal came in the closing moments when Oisin Hickey goaled from a free. The winners had late points by O’Callaghan (free) and Shay Mullane.

After the game Arthur O’Keeffe, Avondhu Board vice-chairman, presented the cup to the winning captain David Relihan. Mark O’Callaghan was named ‘man of the match’.

Castletown­roche now meet the JBHC(2) winners, Ballyhea, in a county qualifier.
