‘Sad news’ as Mallow tyre firm to close

- BILL BROWNE

THE Advance Pitstop on the Limerick Road in Mallow is set to close its doors for the final time this coming Friday.

Speaking to The Corkman, the company’s marketing director, Eddie Ryan, cited a combination of a lack of business and overhead costs as the reason behind the decision to close the Mallow branch, one of four located in Cork.

“Unfortunately, the combination of factors meant a tough decision had to be made,” he said.

“Obviously, Friday will be a sad day for the staff, and indeed the company, and we are looking at how staff from Mallow may be accommodated at our other branches where possible,” he said.

The president of Mallow Chamber, Cllr Pat Hayes, said it was very disappointing to hear the branch would be closing down. “This is very sad news. Over the many years that Advance Pitstop has been operating in Mallow it has been a very good at employer and offered a great service to the local community,” said Cllr Hayes.

IT emerged this week that Advance Pitstop on the Limerick Road in Mallow is set to close its doors for the final time this coming Friday.

Speaking to The Corkman the company’s marketing director, Eddie Ryan, cited a combination of a lack of business and overhead costs as the reason behind the decision to close the Mallow branch, one of four located in Cork.

“From our perspective we have tried every possible adjustment over recent months, including upgrading our signage, in a bid to attract more business but that has not worked out,” said Mr Ryan.

“We do not own the building and there were legacy issues with rent that we were unable to address. Unfortunately, the combination of factors meant a tough decision had to be made and were left with no option but to close the branch. We have 29 other branches around the country and had to weigh up what was the best way forward for the company,” he said.

Mr Ryan said that efforts will be made to relocate the five staff members at the Mallow branch to another location.

“Obviously, Friday will be a sad day for the staff, and indeed the company, and we are looking at how staff from Mallow may be accommodated at our other branches where possible,” he said.

The president of Mallow Chamber, Cllr Pat Hayes, said he it was very disappointing to hear the branch would be closing down.

“This is very sad news. Over the many years that Advance Pitstop has been operating in Mallow it has been a very good at employer and offered a great service to the local community,” said Cllr Hayes.

“I sincerely hope that positions can be found for the Mallow employees at one of the company’s other branches,” he added.
