Data shows junction in Fermoy is among Ireland’s top 20 accident blackspots

- BILL BROWNE

A ROAD junction close to the town centre in Fermoy has been included on a list of the 20 most dangerous accident blackspots in the country.

The junction, where the N72 meets with the R639 road north of Fermoy Bridge by Christ Church, Church of Ireland was one of two Cork intersections included on the list, compiled by Gamma Location Intelligence.

Using data supplied by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) the company, which provides location-based insights to insurance companies and local authorities, has mapped out what it described as the 20 most “treacherous” road segments in the entire country.

Their analysis has revealed the Irish roads with the highest collision rates, as determined by the number of road accidents and collisions causing injury per 100 million vehicle kilometres travelled.

A vehicle kilometre is based on the number of vehicles using the road segment and its length.

Using the data the company also revealed the most dangerous roads in each individual county.

It determined that the worse accident blackspot in Cork was a stretch of road linking Washington Street to Merchants Quay, which recorded 197 collisions per 100 million vehicle kilometres. The road also came in 14th place on the national list of the top 20 most dangerous roads.

The Fermoy junction finished in 20th place on the national list, recording 167 collisions per 100 million vehicle kilometres.

According to the data the most dangerous stretch of road in Ireland is located east of Kylemore Lough in Galway, recording 1,131 collisions.

This was one of eight roads in Galway featured on the national list, with four in Clare, two in Cork, and one each in Wexford, Longford, Tipperary, Mayo, Waterford and Leitrim.
