Heroes

A SEVERE case of All-Ireland football fever gripped Cullen and Milllstreet last weekend, with the popularity of Gaelic games very much evident in the large crowds that turned out to acknowledge local involvement on the triumphant Cork minor and U-20 teams.

The pouring rain did little to dampen the electric atmosphere in Millstreet as the local pipe band led a parade to the local community GAA hall. There, club chairman Michael Cleary, juvenile chairman John O’Riordan and Millstreet Community Council chairman Noel Buckley saluted the achievement of Cork minor Darragh Cashman and U-20 player Shane Hickey.

Darragh and Shane are Millstreet natives and, along with Luke Murphy from Cullen, play underage football with Duarigle Gaels.

“Their success does wonders for the club; everybody got a lift from the All-Ireland victory. It was a tribute to their talents and dedication”, said John O’Riordan.

The players along with colleagues were in big demand for autographs and photographs.

Likewise in Cullen, a terrific atmosphere greeted the players, with Cullen Pipe Band adding to the occasion.

Club chairman Diarmuid O’Connell hailed the involvement of Luke Murphy on the Cork minor football side in addition to the presence of selector Billy O’Connor and his brother, Fachtna, as part of the backroom team.

“It was an emotional feeling to be in Croke Park on All-Ireland final day. To see Luke come on, kick a point and be part of the winning team was special. Hopefully, its a success that Cork can build on,” said Diarmuid.

Man-of-the-moment Luke addressed the enthusiastic gathering and was delighted to see his 83-year-old grandfather, Johnny, there celebrating his birthday.

“Its a privilege for me to bring the Tom Markham Cup to Cullen; it was my ambition to play for Cork, play in Croke Park and win an All-Ireland medal. I’ve done all three”, beamed a delighted Luke.

More celebrations followed on Monday, with the All-Ireland silverware and players earning a rapturous welcome to Cloughoula, Millstreet and Cullen National Schools in addition to a visit to Millstreet Community School.
