Good win for Davis College in first round of Cork Schools Senior Hurling C’ship

- Davis College 3-14 Millstreet C.S. 3-7

DAVIS COLLEGE had a good win over Millstreet C.S. in Kanturk on Friday 20th September in the first round of the Cork Schools Senior Hurling Championship.

In excellent conditions, Millstreet started the game in perfect fashion with a point within a minute of the throw in. They followed that with a quick fire goal from Darragh Cashman as he careered his way through the Davis College rearguard to fire to the roof of the net. Davis College settled into the game with two points from Shane Lyons, 1 free, and the lively Eoin Healy. Millstreet responded with a good point from distance to leave it 1-2 to 0-2 after ten minutes in favour of Millstreet.

Davis College had an excellent five minute spell after this. Shane Lyons pointed from play after some good work from Fionn Woods in midfield. David O’Riordan then stepped up with a good goal, following a good set up from Eoin Healy. O’Riordan quickly added a point after the puck out. Shane Lyons, free, and Jamie Butler added further points as Davis College took the lead at the quarter mark, 1-6 to 1-2.

A vital score came on the twenty minute mark when Jamie Butler did very well to find the net through a crowded goalmouth to open a seven point advantage but Millstreet responded very well. They hit back with a Cashman point. A cracking goal from Guliano Malizia to the top corner of the net from twenty five yards was followed by another Darragh Cashman point to leave just two points between the sides.

Davis College hit back with a Shane Lyons free but Millstreet were not going away and a third goal on 29 minutes meant it was a level game. A Shane Lyons free and a great score from distance from Mikey O’Connor ensured Davis College held a slender two point lead at half time, 2-9 to 3-4.

Davis College started the second half with a sublime sideline cut from Jack Kennefick to split the posts. Three more Shane Lyons points (two frees) opened up a six point gap. The game was effectively over as a contest when Jamie Butler finished from close range to leave it 3-13 to 3-4.

Millstreet did respond with three points in quick succession to minimise the gap but a two man deficit for the closing stages meant they could not break down the Davis College rearguard with Caine Kiely, David O’Leary and Aidan Walsh in particularly fine form.

Shane Lyons rounded off the scoring for the day with another free and a final scoreline of Davis College 3-14 to Millstreet C.S. 3-7.
