Newmarket plays a blinder with fine Culture Night events
FRIDAY last was the 13th annual Culture Night, where events were organised throughout the country to showcase our cultural heritage.
Newmarket was no exception, with two separate events taking place.
Earlier in the evening Eoin (Stan) O’Sullivan performed a short, intimate concert in the library on High Street.
He played a few local Sliabh Luachra tunes on fiddle and guitar, along with a few stories in between explaining the background of the music.
Our local librarian Ger had a well-researched display up showing the role Newmarket and its musicians have played in the preservation and development of the Sliabh Luachra genre of music.
Further down the street, in Scully’s Bar, the Rambling House kicked off at around 9pm, with Mike Guerin hosting.
There were 15 acts from all parts of the county, who kept the crowd entertained with poetry, songs, recitations and music.
The audience joined in with many of the songs, and many of the recitations had the whole bar in tears with laughter.
Newmarket was well represented on the night with local traditional musicians, singers and the gang from the Thursday Singing Session in Scanlon’s taking part.
If you missed it, don’t worry as there will be plenty opportunities to immerse yourself in our local culture.
This is thanks to three weekly open music sessions (on Monday and Sunday nights in Scullys and Thursday nights in Scanlon’s bar) along with many other gigs that take place in the town. EVENTS THIS WEEK: Saturday, September 28:
