Mothers and others taking to the field

-

ON Saturday October 5, the National G4M&O Blitz will be held in Portmarnock, County Dublin, in the Naomh Mearnóg and St Sylvester’s Clubhouses.

G4M&O, or ‘Gaelic for Mothers and others’, is an initiative that was launched to introduce mothers and other women to playing Gaelic Football.

A Newmarket team was set up in early May ( pictured above), which attracted over 50 players from the Duhallow area. Some were taking part in the sport for the first time, but some are football veterans, including many players from the team which won the County Final for Newmarket in 1995.

Coaching the team are Jeremiah Roche and former Ireland Rugby Star Tony Buckley.

The team has received great support from local businesses, with Áth Trasna Medical Centre sponsoring a set of jerseys; the Rock Bar sponsoring training bibs; and most recently Dan Hourigan’s Bar sponsoring water bottles and a first-aid kit.

The team is really looking forward to their trip to Dublin, where almost 1,000 women play each year. Best of luck to all involved, and Áth Trasna Abú!

You can follow their exploits on Facebook at Newmarket G4MO.
