The Corkman

To take semi-final berth

final. And with just six teams remaining in the race, Clon will have a right cut on attempting to revive past glories.

From their opening round, Clon got the measure of Newcestown by a two goal margin. Next up an all West Cork derby, extra time required for Clon to grab a single point win over O’Donovan Rossa, the winners ability to deliver goals proved decisive.

There is a lot of honesty to this Clonakily side, their composition indicates a side laden with serious operators.

‘Keeper Mark White along with his brother Seán, team captain Tom Clancy and Liam O’Donovan featured with Cork during the summer, add in David Lowney and Jack O’Mahony indicate a side not short of confidence.

It’s fair to say that Clon are on the rise and holding such a strong presence on the current county senior panel adds even more reason for the Brewery town to be hopeful. And with Newcestown already in a semi final, they would dearly love another West Cork derby.

Of course Duhallow will have something to say on the matter, they too on a mission towards returning to a county final. Clonakilty are a huge threat to Duhallow’s ambitions yet despite the hectic schedule of late, Duhallow can get home by a narrow margin.

Verdict: Duhallow

Past Meetings

DUHALLOW and Clonakilty hold a rich tradition in the County Senior Football Championship that will be maintained when the sides clash in Saturday’s quarter final at Pairc Uí Rinn. Meetings between the pair may be few and far between yet there has been significant days. Duhallow’s initial venture into the county championship surfaced in 1933 on a defeat to Clon.

Much better for Duhallow West three years later, overcoming Clon to win their first County SFC title. In more recent times, its a full decade since Clonakilty collected their ninth outright It’s fair to say that Clon are on the rise... holding such a strong presence on the senior football panel title on shading St Finbarrs by a single point in the decider.

Enroute, Clon bettered Duhallow at the quarter final stage by a five point margin. Its fair to say Clon victory’s was built on substance and superb long range shooting before showing resilience to run out winners.

Duhallow made a fine contribution as well to a hugely enjoyable contest, and showed great heart to reduce a seven point deficit to three entering the latter stages but not enough to save the day.

Interestingly, a number of key players remain involved, Timmy Anglin and Seán Nagle may again return to midfield for Clon with John McLoughlin, Bart Daly, Aidan Walsh and Donncha O’Connor featuring for Duhallow.

Of course, they are new recruits on both sides that have made a name for themselves on county teams in more recent times.

This makes for an interesting tussle where no quarter will be asked or given to determine Newcestown’s opponents in a semi final.

The Duhallow team from 2009 lined out as K Murphy (Boherbue); J McLoughlan (Kanturk), J Healy (Ballydesmond), P Gayer (Castlemagner); P O’Leary (Kiskeam), D O’Brien (Newmarket), B Daly (do); B O’Callaghan (Ballydesmond), S O’Sullivan (Dromtariffe); D Gayer (Castlemagner), A Walsh (Kanturk), D O’Connor (Ballydesmond); N Fleming (Ballydesmond), N O’Sullivan (Dromtariffe), B Dennehy (Kiskeam).
