Mitchelsto­wn retain intermedia­te status

Mitchelsto­wn 2-14 Adrigole 1-11

MITCHELSTO­WN maintained their Co IFC status for 2020 with a win over Adrigole at Cloughduv on Saturday.

The game was played in wet windy conditions. Mitchelsto­wn had the aid of the elements in the first half. The winners had early points by James Sheehan and Michael Walsh. Adrigole levelled by the ninth minute when Niall O’Sullivan and Kevin Goggin had points.

James Sheehan edged ‘Town ahead with a point before Kevin Goggin with a free levelled at 0-3 each by the 15th minute. Adrigole had their goal in the 19th minute when David Harrington soloed through and placed Cormac Carey who goaled from close range.

David Harrington added a point. Mitchelsto­wn came close to a goal when Shane Beston was put through only to be denied by a point blank save by William, O’Sullivan. Cathal O’Mahony followed with a pointed free for the Avondhu side.

Adrigole had late points by Kevin Goggin (free) and Daniel Harrington 1-6 to 0-4. Cathal O’Mahony replied with an injury time pointed free.

The Beara side came close to a goal, but Luke Hanna saved well from David Harrington. Deep in injury time James Sheehan with a free cut the lead at the break 1-6 to 0-6.

Mitchelsto­wn dominated most of the second half. They scored 2-8 in this half to just 0-5 for Adrigole. Michael Walsh had an early point. Sean O’Sullivan was fouled in the area and a penalty awarded to Adrigole.

Luke Hanna saved very well from Seán O’Shea. This was the turning point. James Sheehan with two pointed frees levelled by the 37th minute 1-6 to 0-9. Adrigole brought on former Cork star Kevin Ger O’Sullivan in midfield who did very well for a while.

The momentum was now with the fitter Mitchelsto­wn side. James Sheehan pointed a 40th minute free as they led 0-10 to 1- 6. David Harrington cut through the Mitchelsto­wn defence and could have goaled, his effort went over for an equaliser.

The Beara side went in front through Sean O’Sullivan who had two rapid points 1-9 to 0-10.

In the 47th minute Pat Molloy had a great goal with Cathal O’Mahony following with two pointed frees as Mitchelsto­wn led 1-12 to 1- 9.

In the 57th minute Pat Magee soloed through and goaled opening up a six point lead. Kevin Goggin got a point back for Adrigole.

In the closing moments James Sheehan (free) and Sean O’Sullivan exchanged a late point. Adrigole, Grenagh, and Youghal are now still involved in the relegation section.
