Grenagh 3-14 Duarigle Gaels 3-12

GRENAGH pulled off a marvellous victory over Duarigle Gaels in a cracking Rebel Óg North Cork U14 Football Division 1 Plate Final hosted in Banteer.

Effectively, the Grenagh boys ensured a favourable ending to a thrilling hour by absorbing intense pressure from the Millstreet and Cullen combination. After falling behind early in the second half, Grenagh rose to the challenge and a concerted spell of pressure yielded telling scores.

Duarigle Gaels arrived in a positive mode with early goals netted by Eamon Guiney and Kieran Duggan. Steadily, Grenagh grew into the game, their confidence boosted by the telling play Fionan O’Riordan, Jason O’Keeffe, Dan Twomey and Paul Ahern.

That allowed Grenagh turn the screw for Evan Daly and Robert Coleman net goals for stalemate at 2-6 apiece at the interval. Gaels took up the running on the restart with Conor Lehane, Edmund Ring, Michael Thornton and Alan O’Leary prominent.

Duarigle’s hopes were boosted by a converted penalty from Hugh Linehan to jump five points ahead. Still there was much to admire in Grenagh’s game in a revival that yielded a 1-7 tally with Seán Browne netting.

The Gaels attempted a late recovery to cut the deficit only for Grenagh hold their nerve during the latter stages to savour a thrilling victory.
