Famous musical ‘son’ comes back to his Charleville roots
THE son of a Charleville emigrant, the late Maureen Liston and her husband Raymond Oldfield, is renowned musician Terry Oldfield, who will perform in concert at the Schoolyard Theatre Charleville on Thursday, October 3.
The Liston family were a popular local family who resided at the top of Harrison’s Place. Maureen Liston emigrated to England to enter the nursing profession.
There, she married Dr. Raymond Oldfield and raised their family of two boys, Mike and Terry, and daughter Sally. All three went on to make their name in the music world where they were hugely successful.
This is an ideal opportunity for Charleville people to welcome home one of their own, a member of the world-famous family of musicians. Local people are indeed privileged to have the unique opportunity to attend an evening of entertainment by a world class musician whose roots are in Charleville.
In a very special evening of music the world-renowned flautist and composer Terry Oldfield will perform a selection of Celtic-influenced music, accompanied by his wife, Soraya, on keyboard and vocals. Brother of Sally Oldfield and the legendary ‘ Tubular Bells’ Mike Oldfield, Terry chose the Schoolyard Theatre as the venue for his ‘Return to Celtic Roots’ concert as it was once the school building attended by his Irish mother, Maureen, who grew up in Charleville in the 1920’s.
Terry, who turned 70 in August this year, is regarding the concert as a tribute to his late mother and the Irish roots which have influenced the music of the Oldfield siblings throughout their illustrious individual careers. This nostalgic concert in Charleville - which marks the end of a week-long visit to Ireland and the start of a European tour including Germany, Spain, England, Belgium and Sweden – is of special significance to Terry and he is hoping to share the event with as many people as possible on the night.
