CBS ‘opens up’ on it many famous past pupils
HUNDREDS of people attended the open evening at Charleville Christian Brothers School (CBS) last Wednesday evening to view what the school has to offer potential students in the coming year.
Those present were welcomed by the Principal, Ms Una Griffin, who delivered a Power Point presentation extolling the virtues of what the school has to offer, and the achievements of pupils, past and present.
In her presentation Ms Griffin showed that the performance of the students at the school was above the national average, with 80% of students going on to third level and 42% going to university, which puts them ahead of all other competing schools.
Charleville CBS is historically famous as the alma mater of President Eamon de Valera, Tom O’Donnell, former Fine Gael Minister for the Gaeltacht and the Islands, Councillor Ian Doyle (FF) and Senator Kieran O’Donnell (FG). In the realms of the Church, Archbishop Daniel Mannix was a pupil, as was the Bishop of Limerick, Henry Murphy, Mathematician Paddy Quinlan of UCC.
Nearer to our own day, from the business world, former Sisk managing director Liam Nagle is a past pupil, as is Denis Murphy, managing director of Flo Technology, Charleville, Eddie Biggane managing director of Diesenvale Charleville and Professor Michael Mortell, President of University College Cork, to mention but a few.
Charleville CBS is also a cradle of hurling, as well as other sporting endeavour, and its teams are regular competitors in schools and colleges hurling competitions, including the famed Harty Cup competition. Among the attendance on last Wednesday evening were past pupils and present Cork hurling stars, Charleville’s Darragh Fitzgibbon and Tim O’Mahony of Newtownshandrum, and Kilmallock’s Paddy O’Loughlin and Dave Reidy from Athlacca, both All-Ireland medal winners with the Limerick senior team in 2018, and who figured on school teams during their time at Charleville CBS.
On Friday afternoon the school’s secondary students participated in the climate action strike with the full co-operation of the teaching staff. The students assembled at the foreground of the school displaying placards proclaiming their support for change in government policies for combatting the present destruction to our climate.
