Four local schools in Sunday Times top 100 rankings

- BILL BROWNE

A NUMBER of schools from across the north and mid- Cork regions have been included in the annual Sunday Times latest guide to the top Irish secondary schools.

Produced annually, the survey charts the progression of students from all of the 712 state funded schools in he country through of third-level institutions over the past three academic years.

In compiling the list, researchers collated data on 27 third-level institutions in the Republic and two from Northern Ireland, with the data originating mainly from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and in part under Freedom of Information legislation.

Widely regarded as the definitive guide to Ireland’s leading third -level ‘feeder’ schools, the list offers a comprehensive overview of the percentage of students progressing onto higher education, determining their ranking on the Parents Power league table.

It also gives the position of respective schools, where applicable, on the previous Parent Power league table published in the Sunday Times 12-months ago.

The list records the percentage number of students from each of the included schools, divided by three, who registered in the academic years 2016/17 and 2017/18 and 2018/19 with one of the seven Irish universities, state-run teacher training colleges, the Royal College of Surgeons, the National College of Art & Design or a Northern Ireland university for an undergraduate, degree-level, full-time course.

In addition, it gives the percentage of students who registered at third level in the above categories or any other state-funded, third-level college, such as an Institute of Technology or National College of Ireland for a degree or sub-degree course. Private third-level courses are not included.

Finally, the list records the number of students registered at each school for the academic year and the student/staff ratio.

As with the last two years, St Mary’s Secondary School in Mallow was the highest ranking school in North and Mid- Cork, standing in 44th spot on the national list. The all-girls school recorded a 73% university take up, with 95% of its pupils going onto third level education.

Three other schools from the region finished in the top 100 on the national list. They were St Mary’s, Macroom, which came in 70th on the list (67.6% university take-up and 97.9% going on to third level), Presentation School, Mitchelstown (76th place, with 66.7% university take-up and 91% going onto third level) and the Loreto Secondary School, Fermoy (100th place. With 62% university take-up and 86% going onto third level).
