Your local library is not just about borrowing books
OFTEN when we think of a library we think of a place you go to borrow books, but in recent years local libraries have greatly expanded the services they provide and Newmarket Library is no exception.
Librarian Ger Dunne explained that there is a lot more on offer for library members nowadays: free internet access, free wifi, large print books, access to online newspaper archives and family history sites, DVDs, audiobooks and you can even borrow musical instruments.
Your library card also gives you access to free e-magazines, online courses, e-books and online newspapers from your own home.
As well as all these services, there are also competitions and other events throughout the year. There is a readers’ group that meets monthly.
“There is no prescribed book and the group meet to discuss what they have read and to make recommendations,” said Ger.
There is also an art competition for children in progress called ‘I Love my Library’, the closing date is Saturday, October 5.
Most recently, for Culture night Eoin (Stan) O’Sullivan gave a short concert of Sliabh Luachra music. There is a small exhibition of newspaper clippings and photographs put together for the concert still on display in the library. And there’s plenty of familiar faces in a photo of the 1973 Summer Festival Committee – so it’s well worth popping in for a look!
Opening hours are Wednesdays 10.30am-1pm, Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays 10.30am1pm and 2pm-5.30pm (closed on Saturdays of Bank Holiday weekends).
