Grenagh always in control in U-14 BHC final

-

Grenagh 2-12 Killavullen 2-5

GRENAGH are this year’s Hunters Rest (Mitchelstown) sponsored Rebel Og North U-14 BHC champions when they were comprehensive winners over Killavullen in the final at Ballyclough on Saturday.

From the offset the better balanced Grenagh side gained supremacy with Fionn O’Riordan, Jack Twomey, Jason O’Keeffe, Dan Twomey, Paul Ahern, Scott Walsh, Robert Coleman, Sean Browne and Padraigh O’Keeffe in devastating form. The Mid Cork surged forward at every given opportunity with their entire forward line working very well as a unit. Dan Twomey was also unerring from frees and played a huge role in his sides victory.

In the fourth minute Grenagh struck for their first goal when a good clearance by Olan Falvey was finished to the net by Robert Coleman and it was followed by four points by Dan Twomey by the end of the first quarter that moved them 1-4 to no score in front. Moments later good work by Paul Ahern resulted in wing back Jack Twomey scoring from long range.

Grenagh came close to a scoring a second goal in the 18th minute but a great save by the Killavullen keeper Charlie Cremin denied Ronan Sherlock. Killavullen registered their opening score when Owen Magnier pointed in the 22nd minute. However, Grenagh continued to press forward and by half time three more pointed frees by Dan Twomey helped them hold a 1-8 to 0-2 lead – Killavullen’s second point coming by Colm Hannon in injury time.

On the changeover Killavullen showed signs of a revival with Colm O’Mahony, Eoin O’Hanlon, Barry Cotter, Ian O’Mahony, Rory O’Regan and Colm Hannon making inroads. However, the North Cork side needed early goals to set up an exciting half but it was not to with a solid Grenagh back line doing very well during the third quarter, Long periods of the second half were very much point for point with Dan Twomey (3) Colm Hannon, Eoin O’Hanlon and Rory O’Regan trading points by the 51st minute as Grenagh maintained their nine point advantage 1-11 to 0-5.

Over the next couple of minutes the winners stretched their advantage. In the 53rd minute a puckout by keeper Zack Hickey set up Dan Twomey who scored a great point from out on the flank. Three minutes later a delivery by Peter Ahern was finished to the net by Sean Hinchion that raced his side 2-12 to 0-5 clear.

Killavullen, to their credit, battled to the end. Shane Cahill and Owen Magnier billowed late goals to the Grenagh net but it was too little too late with Grenagh running out comfortable winners.
