Liscarroll revs up for autism unit fundraising run
THE successful collaboration between Liscarroll National School and Duhallow Vintage Club saw in excess of €2,000 raised for the Lios Cúram Autism Unit, with over 70 vintage cars and tractors from across North Cork and beyond revving up for the road run last Sunday week.
The convoy departed the village at 12pm and took the scenic route through the neighbouring countryside passing through Lisgriffin, Kanturk, Boherbue, Newmarket and Freemount before arriving back in Liscarroll to enjoy refreshments in the school hall.
Duhallow Vintage Club members who organised the fundraiser had been gearing up over the previous few weeks and putting the word out to their fellow enthusiasts who turned up in their droves to support the endeavour.
Evan Burton club members wished to thank everyone who helped out on the day and also those who turned out to support the event.
Lios Cúram Autism Unit opened its doors at Liscarroll National School in 2006, after former principal Anne Maria Bourke and deputy principal Eileen O’Regan were given the opportunity by the Department of Education to add on extra classrooms to cater for children with autism.
Today, the unit operates across three classrooms and caters for 18 children from Liscarroll and it’s catchment area.
School Principal Eileen Barrett said that everyone at the Unit and indeed the entire school body was hugely grateful to Duhallow Vintage Club members for organising and running the successful fundraiser, and she also paid tribute to everyone who supported the event.
“Our primary aim at the Lios Cúram Unit is to integrate children with autism into mainstream, and to give each child every opportunity to reach their full potential,” she said.
Monies raised from the Vintage Run will go towards two new projects - the development of a sensory garden and the creation of a natural outdoor play space.
