Recognition for local heroes in youth awards

-

THE motto of the West Cork Garda Division could very well be “mol an óige agus tiocfaidh sé” as the winners of this year’s youth awards were unveiled in advance of a presentation dinner on Friday.

A total of 91 nominations were received for the West Cork Garda Youth Awards (in association with Supervalu),Garda Damian White, the PRO for the Youth Awards disclosed.

The district award for Macroom went to Fionn Crowley who has recently qualified as a first responder competent in the use of a defibrillator.

“Fionn is an active member of his local Scout Group, and he has volunteered at the

Lee Valley County Beaver Camp, where he ran activities for the younger beavers,” the citation reads.

“Fionn has organised family board game days, with the proceeds going to the CUH Children’s Ward, and the Special Needs Unit of a local school.”

The winners from the mid Cork area also include Macroom Foróige who created a wild flower garden in the town and raised funds to make donations to the local Tidy Towns committee and to the homeless.

A special award for his ‘outstanding contribution to youth’ is to be made to Cill na Martra school principal and local GAA stalward, Gearóid Ó hÉalaithe.

“His dedciation, commitment and community spirit knows no bounds,” an excerpt from a lengthy citation reads.

Garda Damian White, PRO for the Youth Awards, stated that it was important to recognise that all the nominees would benefit, not just the award winners. A

ll other nominees will receive a Certificate signed by their local Superintendent to highlight their nomination. “Adding this to any CV will most definitely enhance it,” he said.

The West Cork Garda division stretches from Beara to Millstreet. The awards will be presented on Friday at Rosscarbery’s Celtic Ross Hotel at 6.30pm.
