Coronavirus crisis escalates

Community groups on hand to offer support to locals

- BILL BROWNE

THE community in Kanturk has rallied together in order to support housebound elderly and vulnerable members of the local community during the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak.

A new voluntary group, ‘ The Mercy House Support Group’ will be in place offering support and advice to people over the coming days and weeks.

Group member Michael Breen said a group of concerned locals met up last Friday to see what they could do to help out local in needs of assistance.

“It was decided, in conjunction with local businesses, to form the group under the umbrella of Mercy House given the hight regard in which it and Sr Helen are held within the local community,” said Mr Breen.

He said group members will be on hand to deliver food, fuel and medical supplies to vulnerable locals and those in self-isolation.

“For example we have already been contacted by a lady who lives outside the area who is in self-isolation. She was concerned that an elderly relative might not be able to get the medication they need so we have arranged to have it delivered to their home,” said Mr Breen.

“We have also identified people who will call on elderly neighbours to ensure they have all of the provisions they need.

At times like this it is vitally important that communities come together to support everyone in need and that is what we will continue to do for however long the current situation lasts,” he added.

Mr Breen said that anyone in need of assistance can contact the following group members: Sr Helen (029 51161), Michel Breen (087 259 7932), Tom Mullane (087 258 4994), Derval Vaughan (087 286 4460), Jerry Hickey (086 060 4818), Padraig Breen (086 196 6745) or Vincent Meade (087 241 4989).

Meanwhile, the community in Knocknagree has also bonded together with volunteers offering their services to people self-isolating, the elderly and the vulnerable.

Should anyone need support or help such as running errands or dropping off supplies they can contact any of the following numbers:
