Stay home, stay calm and keep on working
DURING this unprecedented time in our country we enter uncharted waters regarding education. It is a particularly worrying time for exam students.
The advice from Davis College, Mallow for our exam students is not to be overly worried about what is going to happen with oral or practical exams. These decisions lie with the Department of Education and the State Examinations Commission and everything will be sorted out in due course.
For now, students should get into a routine of work and study and keep to it as you would during any school day. Continue to interact with teachers via email, Google Classroom, etc.
The school website www.daviscollege.ie and school app is updated on a daily basis and has a number of tools to assist students during this difficult time. The school is contactable at all times via admin@daviscollege.ie.
MINI COMPANY
Ms. Carey’s Business class entered the North Cork Enterprise mini company competition. They had developed a company known as ‘Hamper Heaven’ which specialised in mini hampers. These varied from Easter Hampers to wellbeing hampers including tissues, hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes. Representatives of the class presented on the day and have progressed to the next phase of the competition.
ATHLETICS
Over forty students took part in the Munster Schools Indoor Athletics held in Nenagh. Students took part in a range of track and field events on the day and brought home thirteen medals including the Senior Relay bronze title.
LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT
The school light entertainment group were all set to perform on Thursday week last but, unfortunately, school closures saw the event cancelled. The group were anxious to improve on last year’s performance where they came second in Ireland. The performance was a mix of music of various genres as well as dance and artistic performances.
MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS DAY
As part of our TY Young Social Innovators project our student had planned Mallow Mental Health awareness day for late March. Unfortunately, circumstances have meant the cancellation of the event for the moment but we hope to run it before the summer.
DAIRYGOLD COMMUNITY LINK
Davis College have over the years been fortunate to have a community link with Dairygold.
This programme offers a cohort of students the opportunity to Visit the Mill in Lombardstown and see the labs in operation, followed by a tour of the site. Students then interview staff from various career backgrounds. Ms. Kennedy’s TY Business students compile their Curriculum Vitae and Cover Letter and forward them to Dairygold as if applying for a position. Dairygold host a morning of interviews for our students which puts them through the experience of a professional job interview.
Our final session was last Thursday week, where our students presented PowerPoint presentations to Dairygold outlining the benefits of the Dairygold Davis College Community Link. Meadbh Sexton and Kasia Galka received awards for best interviews while Destiny Etinosa and Liam O’Herlihy received awards for best Curriculum Vitae and Cover Letters.
FIRST YEAR AWARDS
First year students were recognised for their effort and achievements over the past few months at award ceremonies held in the school over the course of three days on the final week before closure.
Year Head Ms Stanton and Class Tutors were on hand to present certificates and praise students for all their hard work. Each event had a homely atmosphere with parents present and being spread over three days meant each student got the recognition they deserved.
