Farmers told to mind their mental health as Covid-19 restrictions take greater hold
THE IFA has said that restrictions owing to the outbreak of COVID-19 will present many problems for farmers and their families, and the association has urged farmers to look after their mental health at this difficult time.
IFA Farm Family and Social Affairs Chairperson Caroline Farrell has called on people who feel overwhelmed to limit their social-media and news intake, and instead get some exercise and fresh air. “It is understandable to feel vulnerable or overwhelmed reading or hearing the news; we are in unchartered waters,” said Mrs Farrell.
“Even though it might be difficult right now, it is important to look after your mental health. Talking through your worries with someone can help lessen the worry or anxiety.”
“We are all in this together so make the most of your local IFA network to stay in touch and support other farm families in your community.”
She said it is important to keep a realistic perspective of the situation, and she also said that any news should only be consumed from reliable sources.
“Only use trustworthy and reliable sources of news to get updates on the coronavirus; there is a lot of misinformation out there that is adding to people’s anxiety,” she added.
The association has recommended the Samaritans helpline at 116 123 or www. yourmentalheath.ie as sources for good advice at this time.
Mrs Farrell also recommended the mental health section of the IFA website, www.ifa.ie.
