KILLAVULLEN GAA

-

in light of the Government announcement, the GAA, An Cumann Camógaíochta and the Ladies’ Gaelic Football Association have decided to suspend all activity at club, inter-county and educational levels till April 12.

This is to include all games, training and team gatherings at all ages and all grades. The gym will also be closed at this time.

The GAA grounds will also be closed to everybody up to April 12, unless otherwise directed.

The GAA governing body along with all relevant bodies will liaise with Government officials and review the situation, assessing the impact of these measures on our competitions.

In the meantime, the association is encouraging all members to continue to follow the guidelines which have been provided by the health authorities.

We as the clubs ask all members to practice social distancing at this time, to stay at home where possible and avoid contact socially. If you get the virus, you may give it to your teammate, your coach, your neighbour, your siblings, your parents or your grandparents. Limiting your social interaction will help protect the people closest to you. Please stay at home where possible and please stay safe. We will be back to training and matches as soon as it is safe to do so and look forward to being together again.

There are two very informative websites now active in our parish and worth checking out on a regular basis: killavullenparish.ie/ killavullengaa.com/

It is also worth keeping an eye on the Parish Facebook page, the newly formed group Look after the Elderly in Killavullen and the Killavullen GAA Facebook.

Just a thought: remember all the businesses that you’ve asked for years and years to donate to clubs, events and organisations? When this is all over and life resumes consider supporting them as they restart and rebuild.

THE HISTORIC BREAKTHROUGH IN NORTH CORK – The now removed clock on the old main grand stand above in the Curragh racecourse stated proudly that ‘Time reveals all’, but on September 6, 1998, Killavullen finally made the breakthrough in North Cork Junior Football echelons, comprehensively beating Doneraile, in the final, which was played in Glantane, on a score line of 2-17 to 1-05. The historic team was captained by Martin Carroll, which was due rewards for an outstanding player with Killavullen.

Martin went on to play for Killavullen for a good number of years after that celebrated day in 1998, and indeed was playing for Killavullen when we played Mallow in the Premier Intermediate County Final of 2007.

The 1998 game was effectively over at half time when Killavullen had raced into an interval lead of 2-10 to 0-02, with the high light of the half, being an outstanding goal from distance, from the now Aghada domiciled, Dave Hartnett. Due recognition was afforded to several great servants of the club in the second period of the match, when Michael Rea and John Beechinor and others were given the opportunity to participate. What was to transpire for the next 10 years after the initial breakthrough will live long in the memory, great, great games that will live long in the memory for all.

The team that made the historic breakthrough was as follows: Rory Lankford, Redmond Lane, Pádraig Lankford, Barthly Hayes, John O’Regan, Brian O’Driscoll (0-01), Liam Dorgan, Gene Kelleher (0-02), Paul Hartnett (0-03), Dave Hartnett (1-04), Martin Carroll (1-01), Alan O’Driscoll (002), Michael Whelan (0-01), Ian O’Driscoll (0-02), Joe Taylor (001). The substitutes were: John Beechinor for Joe Taylor; Tony Carroll for Redmond Lane; Michael Rea for Rory Lankford.

WHAT A COMMENDABLE EFFORT

The government has asked that we take our daily exercise within two Kilometres of our own houses, and while I was doing that, it was heart-warming to see a number of individuals walking in the area, armed with a high Visibility vest, gloves and a refuse stack, and they were picking debris from the edge of the road, where people had mindlessly discarded them.

What a commendable effort, so before the grass and weeds covers up these thrown away items, in a flush of growth, it would be no bad thing if other civic minded persons did likewise.

But that does not excuse the despicable behaviour of purposeless morons who continue to spoil our beautiful county by mindlessly shedding food wrappers, take away cartons, and plastic bottles out the windows of their mode of transport. Surely, in these extra ordinary times, that behaviour at least might cease.

LOTTO POSTPONED

The next lotto will be for €1,700 and will occur in the Haven Bar, at a date to be announced.

Killavullen GAA lotto draw will not be held for the next few weeks till the present Corona virus crisis passes. Please hold on to tickets sold for this week’s draw and we will include them in the first draw when we resume again.
