Julia marks 106th birthday in style
THERE were great celebrations at a Killarney Nursing Home last Sunday when Millstreet’s Julia Murphy passed another major milestone in a long life on celebrating her 106th birthday.
Julia come from Gortavehy near Ballydaly and toasted yet another birthday in the company of excited staff members. Born on April 26, 1914 and from a young age, she worked for farmers in the region. She was regarded as a Trojan worker and despite retiring a number of years ago, she was known to not rest on her laurels and holding the capability of reading without glasses.
A hail and hearty diet of bacon and cabbage helped Julia past the centenary mark where as a wind down to the day, she followed all the soaps on TV. And when there was a new plotline in Coronation Street to Fair City, Julia was smack bang in front of the TV with a cuppa in one hand and following every move.
She also confirmed of being a major fan of both Cork hurling and football and can easily reel off the names of county players. Julia has also been very fond of traditional Irish music and one of her major pastimes in retirement was obtaining songbooks and learning a number of songs from times past.
