Disappointment for golfing trio as pro-am cancelled
CHARLEVILLE, MALLOW TRIO HAD THEIR SIGHTS SET ON ADARE MANOR COURSE
AMONG the many golfers who were disappointed at the cancellation of the 2020 J. P. McManus Pro-Am Golf Classic were members of Charleville Golf Club, Margaret Cashman and Anne McEvoy, who were to have been playing in the pre-qualifier on the Charleville Sheltered Housing team.
The pair had been selected to play in the pre-qualifier on foot of their performance in a qualifying competition at Charleville Golf Club.
They had been selected along with John Lane of Mallow Golf Club to play in the pre- qualifier in a bid to participate in the Classic proper in July. “We were on Sr. Celestine’s team for Charleville Sheltered Houses. However, Covid-19 has scuppered that and the rest of the event that was to be held in July at Adare Manor Golf Resort in County
Limerick,” said Margaret.
“While we were all disappointed, we recognise that the health and safety of all that would be involved in the event is paramount in these stressful times, and we respect the guidance and advice of the HSE authorities,” she added.
The cancellation of the event will be a major financial loss to the many charities in the North Cork and County Limerick areas, and further afield, that were to benefit from the golf classic, which attracts the leading golfers from around the world to the Adare Manor golf club, which is also the venue for the Ryder Cup, which is the bi-annual contest between the top golfers from the USA and Europe.
This is only the second time that Ireland has been favoured as the venue for the prestigious international contest between the leading golfers of Europe and America, and it comes to the magnificent Adare Manor Golf Club on the banks of the picturesque Maigue River, which rises in North Cork a few miles from Charleville.
The award laden Parklands Golf Course is the winner of Ireland’s Best Golf Course, Best Parklands Course of the Year and Best Golf Resort of the Year, was opened in 2018 following a spectacular renovation overseen by golf architect Tom Fazio.
