National Tidy Towns cancellation won’t stop work on Charleville town

- Mike McGrath’s CHARLEVILLE LE mmcgrath@corkman.ie

THE cancellation of the 2020 National Tidy Towns Competition elicited the following response from a spokesperson for the local committee, as follows:

“The mission of Charleville Tidy Towns is and has always been to improve the image of Charleville by keeping the town and environs tidy. To this end we work for the betterment of Charleville so the cancellation of the National Tidy Towns competition for 2020 does not have a major effect on our work. Our focus is still to make Charleville as pleasant as possible a place in which to live and work.

“During the past weeks some of our volunteers have been working individually on the maintenance of some of our planted areas. Work has been carried out on the beds on both sides of the N20 approach road from Cork near Amber, the new beds on the Limerick Rd, The Garden of Remembrance, the garden opposite Holy Cross Church and the planting around the fountain. This has been done by volunteers working on their own to ensure their safety. Some of our volunteers are cocooning and our best wishes are extended to them.

“We intend to continue with the projects we had agreed on including:

1. Improving the approach road from Kilmallock.

2. Planting of flowers on the Limerick Road. 3. Working on projects with a couple of community groups.

4. Working on a planting programme with Charleville CBS.

5. Improving biodiversity by sowing wildflowers in the wildlife area of the town park.

“How much we can get done will depend on how we can work in a safe way, as we will adhere at all times to the government guidelines which are necessary to reduce the risk posed by Covid-19.

“We would like to thank all our volunteers and the general public who help us. In particular we thank our FAS workers, Noel and Tom, who have done trojan work.”

So, it is business as usual for the committee and helpers of Charleville Tidy Towns Committee, and their altruistic approach to the wonderful work they do for the enhancement of Charleville town is deserving of every support of the general public, who benefit greatly from their selfless work.
