Meelin win Duhallow pitch title on social media
MEELIN GAA is celebrating a divisional title this week after being crowned Duhallow GAA Pitch championship winners.
Nineteen grounds were eligible for the vote on social media, and the novel concept entertained GAA enthusiasts during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic with 12,000 voting.
Meelin beat off some hot opposition in the knock-out competition, and it was, perhaps, no surprise that Meelin and Banteer made it to the decider before the John Brosnan Memorial Ground took the plaudits.
The complex is named after a respected Meelin native, for more than half a century, John Joe Brosnan left an indelible mark on GAA affairs. Holding the office of Secretary to the Duhallow Junior Board earned plaudits for his efficiency and administrative skills to earn the Meelin native respect and esteem at all levels of the organisation in addition to holding the position of Editor to “The Corkman”.
Not only is the Meelin ground the highest GAA pitch in Ireland and the home of 2011 All Ireland Junior A Hurling Championship victors, it also hosted the biggest hurling match in history in 2013. The club celebrated after the Guinness Book of Records confirmed that a marathon match was added to its official records where a total of 916 players togged out to play matches over a six hour duration.
Down through the years, Meelin GAA club have invested sums of money on ensuring an excellent playing surface and accompanying structures for players and patrons. And the public has voted, at least one championship resolved in 2020, Meelin crowned number one GAA Ground within Duhallow!
