Call for a dedicated Expressway bus stop in Newtwopothouse
PRESSURE is building on Bus Eireann to provide an Expressway bus stop on the N20 corridor at Newtwopothouse to service people living and working along the route.
Cllr Liam Madden (FG) said the provision of a dedicated Expressway stop-off service for the village was among the issues raised by people on the local election campaign trail last year, with almost 350 locals since signing a petition to push the issue with Bus Eireann.
However, he said he had been in contact with Bus Eireann on the issue and they had said
Expressway only offers a limited service, with stops based on customer demand.
Cllr Madden said he believed there was sufficient demand for such a service from people living and working along the corridor, as evidenced by the fact that a petition supporting an application for the service garnered some 344 signatures.
“The area in question is a significant hub for North Cork with large employers such as Kostal and Masterlink, many other small and medium sized businesses and schools dotted along the N20 corridor. So the demand is there,” said Cllr Madden.
“The fact that Newtwopothouse no longer has a post office or grocery store makes the need for a regular bus service even more important as people without cars have to travel to nearby towns for their daily needs,” he added.
Cllr Madden said a regular bus service along the route would also be a distinct advantage for third levels students from the locality travelling to colleges in Cork and Limerick.
“Newtwopothouse has ample space for a bus stop in both directions, with parking lay-bys and a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights. So the infrastructure is already in place,” he said.
“With this in mind, I know I know that Cork County Council would be willing to back an application to Bus Eireann for a bus stop there.”
