GARDAI have charged a 38-year-old North Cork man over an incident where a man was stabbed in the leg and had a bottle of vodka stolen in Cork city centre.

Detectives charged Jason O’Callaghan, a native of Mallow but currently of no fixed abode, following the incident on the Grand Parade on June 23.

The incident is alleged to have happened when three men approached a man sitting on a park bench in Bishop Lucey Park, and one of the men allegedly assaulted him.

The injured man was taken to the Mercy University Hospital, where he was treated for a stab wound to his leg before he was later discharged from hospital

Det Garda Brian Barron told Cork District Court that he arrested and charged Mr O’Callaghan with a total of four offences including robbery and assault.

Mr O’Callaghan was charged with assaulting Laurynas Sadzeyiciuis, who is in his 30s, causing him harm at Bishop Lucey Park in Cork on June 23.

Mr O’Callaghan was also charged with robbing Mr Sadzeyiciuis of a bottle of vodka, worth €13, on the same occasion.

He also was charged with stealing a steak knife, worth €5, the property of Delia’s Kitchen, Carey’s Lane, also on June 23, and Mr O’Callaghan was also charged with causing criminal damage to a flower arrangement at Scoozi’s on Winthrop Lane on the same date.

Det Garda Barron told the court that Mr O’Callaghan replied “I’m very sorry for what happened” to the first two charges when he was charged after caution.

Defence solicitor Charlie O’Connor said that Mr O’Callaghan, a native of Mallow, was not making any application to the court for bail at this stage.

Sargent John Kelleher applied for a remand in custody for a week, and Judge Olann Kelleher decided to remand Mr O’Callaghan in custody to appear again on July 2 2020.

Judge Kelleher also granted free legal aid.
