GAELS TAKE FIRST DUHALLOW CUP OF THE SEASON[

AND THE WIN IS A FIRST FOR BALLYDES’ KISKEAM COMBO

- JOHN TARRANT

WITH the GAA action in full swing across the county, the first piece of silverware of the season within Duhallow was up for grabs earlier this week when Sliabh Luachra Gaels overcame Boherbue in the Central Sports Stores of Kanturk U21 Football Championship Final.

Though there is a cessation of playing activity in the Midlands owing to increased numbers of Covid 19 cases, games continue in Cork, albeit with crowd restrictions in place.

And those fortunate to attend the Monday evening’s final in Cullen received full value for their money when the Ballydesmond and Kiskeam combination of Sliabh Luachra Gaels overcame neighbours Boherbue by a single goal.

Duhallow Junior Board Chairman Joe Kearns welcomed the return of gaelic games.

“Within Duhallow, the championships are very special and traditionally they rouse great interest amongst spectators, the excitement and rivalry second to none. Thankfully, activity has resumed with the clubs making a huge effort to comply with regulations”, he said.

Divisional titles are precious and Sliabh Luachra Gaels’ joint captain Darragh Moynihan expressed elation on putting a new name on the trophy.

“We had trained since last December, such a huge effort put in by players and the management team. None of the games were won easily and to return from the shutdown makes it extra special”, said Darragh.

Divisional and county championships fixtures continue this weekend, with no more than 200 people assembled at any one venue. For each game, places are allocated to players, coaches, officials and media, with only a maximum of 80 tickets available to fans.
