Hard working Men’s Shed seek support of community

CHURCHGATE COLLECTION IS VITAL TO KEEPING THEIR WORK GOING

- SHEILA FITZGERALD

KANTURK Men’s Shed group will hold their church gate collection on the weekend of August 22nd and 23rd.

“We are asking the people of Kanturk and the local community to help us out as best they can,” Chairman Gerard Greaney, speaking on behalf of the group, said.

Across Ireland, Men’s Shed groups have proved to be a real asset to local communities as well as an invaluable social resource for the men involved.

“We are a non-profit organisation and our only annual fundraisers are the church gate collection and our Christmas fair,” Gerard explained.

During the past few years the Kanturk group has been involved in some wonderful local community projects, including the construction of 16 benches complete with concrete foundations for the town park. “All involved in the Shed dug in over that period until we successfully completed the project,” Gerard explained.

Over the past two months the men have been constructing a large Christmas crib which will be the main focal point at O’Brien St during the festive season. The men paid tribute to Shakira O’Connor who did the picturesque backdrop painting.

Children attending the local Convent Primary School are thrilled with the beautiful sensory garden and buddy bench provided by the Men’s Shed. In addition to work for the community, the men have been busy completing projects such as wishing wells and wheel barrow garden planters for private homes.

“These are just some of the important projects completed by the Men’s Shed, highlighting its value not alone to the men involved but to the local community and the town of Kanturk,” Gerard said.

“Again, we want to remind everyone that our church gate collection will take place on the weekend of August 22nd and 23rd, and if people are not able to attend Mass they can donate at Gerry’s Car Wash in Aspel’s Spar,” he added.
