JOHN BARRY, RIP – AN APPRECIATION

The late John Barry first came to my attention over 30 years ago when he appeared in an advert. on Television for The Irish Heart Foundation.Following his appearance on TV I realised we surely had a comedian in our midst . Some years later I was invited to Murphy’s Station Mass at their home in Commons in October 2002.

After mass John was the M.C. for the night to get a sing ,song going. John started by passing his cowboy hat around and when he gave a signal to stop that person would have to sing.John was surprised to discover another cowboy in the crowd.!!This was one of the most enjoyable nights I remember.

More great nights followed, with Christmas parties an annual event, and other great nights to remember.John loved singing cowboy songs such as “The Bridle hanging on the wall” “The coast of Malabar””Back in the Saddle again””El Paso””The Strawberry Roan””Jesse James” and lots more.

John was a most conscientious person and was a great credit to An Garda Siochana with whom he served as Garda Sergeant until his retirement. He was also a member of The Garda Choir.

John loved spending time in his native Freemount and loved coming to the annual carnival and participating in the Fancy Dress Parade and any other event that he could manage to attend. In recent years he loved attending the weekly 45 drives when he visited Commons. He loved meeting people and enjoyed the “craic” at the game.

He also liked attending The Thursday Club Gramophone Circle and presented his music choice on occasions with the help of his sister Noreen ,both great music lovers.

John’s passing leaves a void that will never be filled. To his wife Kay and Family,Sister Noreen,Nephews,Nieces and friends, we the people of Freemount owe them our deepest sympathy. May his Soul rest in Peace.

Jerry O’Callaghan.
