Kilshannig defeat Fermoy in high scoring contest

-

Kilshannig 2-22 Fermoy 2-13

FOLLOWING a high scoring Hibernian Hotel JAHC encounter at Killavullen on Sunday evening, Kilshannig got their season back on track when they defeated a resolute Fermoy side. The opening half was played at a hectic pace with the lead changing hands on a number of occasions. Kilshannig were first off the mark when Kieran Twomey had two points by the third minute.

The lead was short lived with Fermoy striking for the games opening goal in the sixth minute when Eric Delaney billowed a penalty to the net that helped them hold a 1-3 to 0-4 lead by the 10th minute. Kilshannig’s response was swift and two minutes later they regained the lead when Conor McMahon and Diarmuid O’Sullivan linked up well to set up the inrushing Kieran Twomey who dispatched to the net from a very tight angle 1-5 to 1-3.

Fermoy regrouped very well and two pointed frees by the impressive Eric Delaney had them tied at the end of the first quarter. As the half went on the better balanced Kilshannig outfit shaded matters with Jack Kearney, Eoghan Burke, Darragh O’Sullivan very solid in the half back line. Up front their entire forwards line worked very well as a unit reeling off some marvellous scores. Jack Twomey (3) Jack Kearney, Barry O’Shea and Kieran Twomey had points for the Glantane side by the interval with Eric Delaney having four points for Fermoy who trailed at the short whistle by 1-11 to 1-9.

On the changeover Fermoy who had some good displays by Ronan O’Callaghan,

Greg Lardner, James O’Sullivan, Eric Delaney and Alan O’Connor hit the front again in the 32nd minute when Garry O’Callaghan set up Alan O’Connor for a cracking goal and it was immediately followed with an Eric Delaney point after he received a good pass from Alan Baragry that moved them 2-10 to 1-11 ahead. Try as they might Fermoy were unable to push on even though they stayed in contention for long periods of this half.

Kilshannig on the other hand found scores much easier to come by. They picked of the next five points before they had their second goal in the 43rd minute when a good delivery by Owen O’Sullivan saw Conor McMahon finish to the net following a goal mouth scramble and in the process move the winners 2-16 to 2-10 in front.

The last quarter was very much point for point with, Diarmuid O’Sullivan (2) Eric Delaney,

Kieran Twomey, Alan O’Connor and Paudie Shanahan swapping points by the 54th minute as Kilshannig maintained a six point cushion when leading 2-19 to 2-13.

The winners added three more points before the final whistle by Jack Twomey, Eanna O’Hanlon and Owen O’Sullivan to run out deserving winners by a nine point margin.
