Sliabh Luachra welcomes aspiring cyclists
INTEREST in cycling is on the increase, and Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club continues to grow.
Indeed, such is the uptake in demand that an introduction for under-age recruits met with an overwhelming response in Knocknagree last weekend.
The club was founded in the summer of 2012 by Donie Kelleher of Rathmore and Paudie Keane from Gneeveguilla, and membership has grown over the years, with male and female enthusiasts enjoying the recreation.
Based in Rathmore, the club caters to all levels of fitness and ability – from beginners to racers and from youth to veteran. Of course, the club is now renowned for undertaking great work for charity, with the Paud O’Leary and Willie Reen Memorials drawing numbers far and wide. An open morning brought out numbers to Knocknagree, much to the delight of youth officer Tim Murphy and coach Richard Cleverley.
“Given the pandemic, there is a great appetite for cycling, we are thrilled with the response and the Fair Green was a great location to introduce everybody to the sport,” said Tim. Meanwhile, it was a productive outing for Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club at the National Juvenile championships hosted in Kilmacthomas, County Waterford by Panduit Carrick Wheelers, with four medals won by Abaigh Dennehy, Cianan Dennehy, Kate Murphy and Amy Fleming.
