Cyclist-friendly pathway to be included in Kanturk Relief road
Duhallow project among first to feel ‘Green’ effect
CYCLISTS passing through Duhallow’s capital can look forward to a new cycle lane when the, just approved, plans for a relief road are finally realised, it has been announced.
Cork County Council announced on Friday that it had ‘progressed the Kanturk Link Road to tender stage’.
The project will accommodate motor, pedestrian and cycling traffic between Bluepool Upper and Mill Road and will improve connectivity and access to Kanturk Town Centre and to the proposed new national school on Mill Road for a variety of commuters.
This project will be delivered under the Council’s Project ACT (Activating County Towns) for Kanturk, and will facilitate future development of lands in the area while reducing traffic and congestion in Kanturk town centre.
Tenders are due on September 15 with works envisaged to begin in mid October and finish in August 2021.
The proposed works include the construction of approximately 450 metres of new carriageway; installation of footpaths and cycle tracks; surface-water drainage, installation of public lighting and ducting. The provision of the
Link Road will provide a safer environment for all road users especially for vulnerable road users, while new footpaths and cycle tracks will foster sustainable modes of transportation for the community.
The project is being funded by Cork County Council and the
Department of Rural and Community Development through the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund.
Back in October, grant aid of almost €620,000 had been allocated to the project by previous Rural Affairs Minister Michael Ring. This was added to by Cork
County Council.
The road will be located on the eastern end of the proposed access road to be constructed for the new school adjacent to the Mill Road and connect to the L5067 at Bluepool Upper.
Part 8 planning was granted for the project in May of 2017, and the land for the road has been purchased and fenced off by Cork County Council.
County Cork Mayor Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said the planned development would enable the community to grow while moving forward as well as simultaneously enhancing the safety of road users.
“The town of Kanturk provides vital amenities for its residents and the surrounding hinterlands,” she said.
“These planned developments will greatly improve accessibility in the town.”
Deputy Chief Executive of Cork County Council James Fogarty pointed out that the development of ‘sustainable transport options would enhance safety and facilitate further growth and were vital to the success of Project ACT and meeting Cork’s goals for Project Ireland 2040.
“Kanturk will benefit from this new infrastructure for years to come, securing its status as a great place to live, work and do business in.”
